Nomination Process & Criteria

The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation’s Most Endangered Historic Properties List has identified nearly 100 threatened sites since 1992. Although a listing won’t necessarily save a property or provide funding, it creates awareness and galvanizes communities to preserve their endangered sites.  From schoolhouses and farms to breweries and rodeo grounds, the Most Endangered Historic Properties List spotlights historic places across the state threatened by demolition, neglect, lack of funds, inappropriate development, or insensitive public policy.

"Saves" of Most Endangered Historic Properties

Port Townsend’s Fire Bell Tower (listed 1999-2002) received a State Historic Preservation Officer’s Award and the Jefferson County Historical Society’s Mary P. Johnson Award for rehabilitation. After nine years on the Most Endangered List, a local buyer acquired the Hyer Farm in Sequim from the State Department of Transportation and immediately rehabilitated the farmhouse. Attention is now being directed toward the barn and outbuildings, with the possibility that the entire site may again be used for agricultural purposes. The Kittitas County Rodeo Fairgrounds Grandstand in Ellensburg was listed for three years before being saved in 1999 and fully rehabilitated. Vacant or underused since 1969, Five Mile Schoolhouse in Mead (2003 List) was saved as voters overwhelmingly passed a bond levy of $1.7 million for renovation and site improvements. The school will now house the Mead Education Parent Partnership, a program that supports the district’s home-schooled students.
